How to get your concealed weapons license (CPL) in WA.
Here is how to get you concealed pistol license and a summery of all the fees that are required.
What to know:
You will need to contact your local law enforcement agency (LEA) to apply for your license. You can call or go online or in person.
Law enforcement agencies run background checks and issue you your CPL. The Department of Licensing (DOL) is the record keeper.
License requirements:
You must be 21 years old to get a CPL. You are required to have a CPL if you:
Carry a pistol concealed on your person.
Have a loaded pistol in your vehicle.
You will not qualify for a CPL if you:
Have a revoked concealed pistol license.
Are subject to a court order or injunction concerning the possession of firearms.
Are free on bond or personal recognizance while awaiting trial, appeal, or sentencing for a felony offense.
Have an outstanding warrant for your arrest for a felony or misdemeanor.
Were ordered to forfeit a firearm within the last 12 months.
Were convicted of a felony. To restore your rights, contact the courts where your conviction is or the superior court where you live.
How to apply:
Call or check the website of your local LEA and verify you live in their jurisdiction. If so, ask for a Concealed Pistol License Application.
If you live in unincorporated pierce county and the cities of DuPont, Edgewood, Fife, Fircrest, Lakewood, Milton, Orting, Roy, Ruston, Steilacoom, Tacoma, and University Place you may only apply via South Sound 911. If you live outside of those cities you will need to reach out to your local LEA. Anyone applying for a CPL from out of state may apply anywhere in the state. (per RCW 9.41.070)
You will need a valid state drivers license or ID.
If applicable, bring your original certificate of rehabilitation or firearms restoration orders.
Pay licensing fees with cash or check/money order payable to LEA. Or online if using South Sound 911.
LEA will complete the fingerprinting and background check. If using South Sound 911 you will need to schedule an appointment for fingerprinting.
Your CPL will be issued and sent to you via mail approximately 30 days after your fingerprints have been received. Your license will expire 5 years after the issue date.
